About me

It's often said that a picture paints a thousand words. As an editor, I am compelled to focus on those one thousand exceptionally crafted words to paint the picture, as I view the two art forms as very similar. Wording and phrasing supply the color; logic flow and structure equate to the composition of an image in a work of art; the subtlety of implication and omission, and any level of detail in writing, is expressed in art with technique and style ranging from realism to impressionism and abstract. All work together—in a way that is at the same time mechanical and intuitive, creative, and very human—to express. While I enjoy the artform of writing and editing, I also enjoy that mechanical aspect, which is akin to a puzzle-challenge that can be solved in more than one way! I enjoy working for a variety of clients who either need the finishing touches and grammatical corrections for publishing in technical journals, or entire papers drafted and written from a literature search—and everything in between!

It is a great feeling of accomplishment when a sentence flows just right. I enjoy helping authors communicate their findings effectively while learning about research in areas related to my expertise. What I find the most exciting about editing is the opportunity to read a diverse range of papers on a regular basis, for example, biomaterials on one day and electronics on the next. When I am editing a paper for a specific target journal, I will often download and skim an additional paper or two from that journal. Besides informing how I address format and style conventions, this practice sometimes has highlighted new applications to incorporate into my teaching of Chemistry. The geographic diversity of my clients is another aspect of editing that I appreciate. It is rewarding to know that my work helps research get published all over the world.
